Magnetic Particle Testing (MPI) is a widely used and highly effective non-destructive testing method that allows for the detection of discontinuities in ferromagnetic materials.
Reliance Inspection, a leading NDT testing service provider, offers MPI using visible and fluorescent portable techniques.
How Does it Work?
MPI works by inducing a magnetic field into the ferromagnetic material being tested.
This magnetic field causes any surface or near-surface discontinuities to become magnetically charged and, therefore, visible through the application of iron oxide or iron oxide-copper oxide magnetic particles.
The particles are attracted to the charged areas, highlighting the presence of any defects.
Application of Magnetic Particle Testing
- Detecting surface and slightly subsurface discontinuities in ferromagnetic materials
- Inspection of welds and castings in various industries such as aerospace, automotive, oil and gas, and power generation
- Non-destructive evaluation of components, including machinery, pipes, and pressure vessels
- Detecting cracks, laps, seams, inclusions, and other surface-breaking defects in ferromagnetic materials
- Evaluation of raw materials and finished products in the manufacturing process
- Post-weld inspection to verify the quality of welding
- Pre-service and in-service inspection of critical components in the oil and gas, power generation, and aerospace industries
- Detection of subsurface and surface defects in ferromagnetic materials that may compromise the strength and reliability of the structure
- In-field testing of significant components, such as pipelines and pressure vessels, without the need for disassembly
- Evaluation of surface treatments such as plating, cladding, and coatings.
Benefits of Magnetic Particle Testing
- Quick and easy to perform.
- Can be performed on-site or in-situ
- No need to disassemble equipment or components
- No significant surface preparation is required
- It can be used on a wide range of ferromagnetic materials
- Results are immediately visible and can be recorded digitally for future reference
Reliance Inspection’s experienced technicians use state-of-the-art equipment and techniques to provide accurate, reliable results that allow clients to make informed decisions about the integrity of their assets.
